Fall Oil Storage Tank Maintenance
The fall is an ideal time to assess your home heating system in preparation for the winter. One key piece of equipment you should always keep in mind is your oil storage tank! If you have an aboveground tank in your basement or on your property, it’s wise to take the time to inspect it in order to catch issues early on and address them.
Here are some tips on how to maintain your oil storage tank during the fall:
- Keep a full tank. We’ve stressed this before, but it’s always important to keep your tank full. You may not be using your heating system as much during the fall, but keeping a full tank will prevent sediment buildup that can damage your heating equipment.
- Have a professional check out your tank. At the beginning and the end of each cold season, you should call Tomasso Bros. to have one of our technicians take a look at your tank. We can spot signs of overuse, damage, or corrosion.
- Tighten fill and vent caps. Ensuring all fill and vent caps are tightly secured will prevent air from getting into the tank. The less air that gets into the tank, the safer the tank will be.
- Clean the tank. The outside of the tank should be cleaned thoroughly and often to prevent dirt and dust from getting inside the tank. The cleaner the exterior the tank, the less debris will seep into it. Also, keep in mind that every three to five years the inside of your tank should be cleaned by a technician.
